Robert Surcouf

Robert Surcouf was a French privateer, businessman, and slave trader who operated in the Indian Ocean during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Known for capturing numerous prizes, he amassed wealth through ship-owning, privateering, and slave trading. Surcouf started as an officer on different ships before getting involved in illegal slave trading and commerce raiding. He conducted successful campaigns against British trade, including capturing the East Indiaman Kent. Surcouf was honored with the Legion of Honour and continued his maritime activities until his death in 1827.
