Francesco Schettino, an Italian former shipmaster, was in charge of the cruise ship Costa Concordia during the tragic incident in which the vessel hit an underwater rock and overturned off the Italian island of Giglio in 2012. This led to the tragic loss of thirty-two passengers and crew members. In 2015, he was handed a sixteen-year prison sentence for his role in the disaster. Following the conclusion of his appeals, he commenced serving his sentence in 2017.
