(German Aviator) Mathias Rust, a German aviator, made an unauthorized flight from Helsinki to Moscow in 1987, landing near Red Square. This flight had a significant impact on Soviet military leadership, leading to the dismissal of senior officers and supporting Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms. Rust was sentenced to four years in a labour camp for violating border crossing and air traffic regulations, but was eventually pardoned and released after serving 14 months in prison.
