Yōji Kuri is a renowned Japanese cartoonist and independent filmmaker known for his influential role in Japanese independent animation. As a key figure in the "Animation Association of Three" collective, he led the revival of modern-styled, adult-oriented animation in 1960s Japan. Kuri's work, characterized by dark comedy and surreal storytelling, has garnered international acclaim, especially among counter-cultural audiences. Although retired from filmmaking, he continues to share his expertise as an animation teacher. His significant contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, such as a Lifetime Achievement Award at Animafest Zagreb.
