Philipp Jakob Spener, a German Lutheran theologian, is recognized as the founder of Pietism. Referred to as the "Father of Pietism," he was a prolific writer, known for works such as Pia desideria and Allgemeine Gottesgelehrtheit. Spener served as chief pastor in the Lutheran Church in Frankfurt before moving to Berlin at the invitation of the court of Brandenburg. Despite facing opposition and accusations of theological errors, he played a significant role in establishing the University of Halle and had ongoing conflicts with Lutheran orthodoxy.
