Sterling Walter Hayden was an accomplished American actor, author, model, and sailor. The entertainment career of Hayden, spanning over 4 decades, saw him succeeding both as a leading man and as a supporting actor. Known for his distinctive "rapid-fire baritone" voice, Hayden played leading roles in several westerns and film noir projects, such as ‘The Killing,’ ‘Johnny Guitar,’ and ‘The Asphalt Jungle.’ He later gave several memorable performances in supporting roles. One of his most notable roles was that of ‘General Jack D Ripper’ in the critically and commercially successful political satire/black comedy ‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.’ He also found fame in the New Hollywood era, with remarkable performances in notable films such as ‘1900,’ ‘The Long Goodbye,’ and ‘The Godfather.’ He reprised his role from ‘The Godfather’ in the TV miniseries ‘The Godfather Saga.’ He also appeared in several other TV productions, such as the TV film ‘A Carol for Another Christmas.’ He made his final screen appearance in the TV miniseries ‘The Blue and the Gray.’ Hayden received several military awards for his services during the Second World War.
