Michael P. Murphy was a U.S. Navy SEAL lieutenant who laid down his life in service of the nation during the War on Afghanistan. For his dauntless character and valor, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Actively interested in sports as a child, he loved taking part in peewee football and youth soccer competitions. He was equally sharp when it came to his education. A double major in political science and psychology, he could have picked from a list of great law schools, but his heart was set on becoming a Navy SEAL. Once he received his Special Forces insignia (The SEAL Trident), he was deployed in various countries like Jordan, Qatar, Djibouti before being transferred to Afghanistan to support the efforts of Operation Enduring Freedom. While scouting the hills of Kunar province as part of Operation Red Wing , he and his team of four were ambushed by a large contingent of Afghan Taliban militia. Cornered and outnumbered, his team showed an intrepid fighting spirit while he was able to call for support. Many civilian and military assets have been named after Michael P. Murphy, including a rigorous workout called the Murph Challenge.
