Maulana Karenga

Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga is an American activist, author, and professor of Africana studies. He was active in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and co-founded the black nationalist group US Organization. Karenga notably created the holiday of Kwanzaa, promoting African traditions and the "seven principles of African heritage." He has been awarded two doctorates and currently chairs the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long Beach. Karenga has authored several books and continues to make significant contributions to the field of Africana studies.
