Sergey Obraztsov was a pioneering Soviet and Russian puppeteer known for establishing puppetry as an art form in the Soviet Union. He founded the State Central Puppet Theatre in Moscow in 1931, which toured extensively around the USSR and abroad, popularizing artistic puppetry in countries like the United States and Britain. Obraztsov staged over 70 plays for both children and adults, directed puppet films and documentaries, and was a key figure in the International Union of Puppeteers. He received prestigious awards for his contributions to the art of puppetry.
