Known for their androgynous physical features and remarkable skills as a mimic and spy, they played a significant role in the Seven Years' War and conducted espionage for France in Russia and England. For nearly half a century, d'Éon presented publicly as a man, engaging in masculine pursuits, while also successfully infiltrating the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia by assuming a female identity. In their later years, d'Éon transitioned to living openly as a woman and received official recognition of this from King Louis XVI.
