Hasekura Tsunenaga

Description: (The First Japanese Ambassador to the Spain and to the Americas)
Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga, a kirishitan Japanese samurai in the service of Date Masamune, led the Keichō Embassy to visit Pope Paul V in Europe and New Spain. Despite a warm reception, trade agreements were unsuccessful due to Japan's anti-Christian policies. Hasekura's return marked the end of the embassy, and he passed away a year later. His mission opened the door for future Japanese embassies to Europe, ending Japan's isolationist stance after two centuries.
