Christina Rossetti

Description: (Poet, Writer, Hymnwriter)

Christina Rossetti was an English poet, best known for penning down poems such as ‘Remember’ and ‘Goblin Market.’ Born and raised in London, Christina received early education at home by her parents. Her father was a poet, while her mother was a homemaker. Christina grew up with three siblings and all of them later became either poets or writers. Christina’s parents made her study religion thoroughly, which made her interested in the subject quite early. Influenced by her father and many other classic English poets, such as John Keats, Sir Walter Scott, and Ann Radcliffe, Christina began writing poems at the age of 12. Christina was 14 when her father suffered mental and physical illnesses, and she had to quit schooling. In her late teenage years, she developed her own style of writing, which was an amalgamation of Bible verses and folk tales. She published her first poem at the age of 18, and later published her poem collection ‘Goblin Market and Other Poems,’ which brought her national fame and appreciation. She kept writing poems all her life but toward the end of her life, she mostly wrote devotional and children’s poetry.
