He made history as the first wrestler from Dagestan to win a world title in freestyle wrestling. Aliyev represented the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games in 1960, 1964, and 1968, finishing fourth and sixth in his appearances. The Russian Wrestling Federation established the annual Ali Aliev Memorial International Wrestling Meeting in his honor at the Ali Aliev Wrestling Training Center in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, Russia, following his passing.
