(Russian Artistic Gymnast) Elena Mukhina, a Soviet gymnast, became the all-around champion at the 1978 World Championships. However, her career was cut short by a broken leg in 1979, causing her to miss competitions and undergo a rushed recovery. Just before the 1980 Summer Olympics, she suffered a severe neck injury while attempting a challenging tumbling move, resulting in permanent quadriplegia. Mukhina's gymnastics career was marked by victories as well as a tragic conclusion due to a career-ending injury.
