Andrews played a crucial part in persuading Gandhi to return to India from South Africa, where he had been involved in civil rights activism. Gandhi affectionately referred to Andrews as Christ's Faithful Apostle and his students honored him with the title Deenabandhu, or "Friend of the Poor."
