Richard E. Stearns is an accomplished American computer scientist known for his pioneering work in computational complexity theory. He was awarded the prestigious ACM Turing Award in 1993 alongside Juris Hartmanis for their influential paper that laid the groundwork for this field. Stearns graduated with a B.A. in mathematics from Carleton College and later earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He currently holds the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University at Albany, part of the State University of New York.
