(Computer scientist) Barbara Liskov is a highly influential American computer scientist renowned for her pioneering contributions to programming languages and distributed computing. She is widely recognized for introducing abstract data types, data abstraction, and the Liskov substitution principle, which have significantly influenced object-oriented programming, subtyping, and inheritance. In 2008, she was honored with the prestigious Turing Award for her outstanding work. Liskov was one of the earliest women to earn a doctorate in computer science in the U.S. and the second woman to receive the Turing Award. Currently, she holds the positions of Institute Professor and Ford Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
