(Zoologist, Ornithologist) John Xantus de Vesey, also known as de Csíktaplócza, was a Hungarian exile and zoologist. Trained as a lawyer, he served in the Hungarian Army during the uprisings of 1848–1849. After being exiled and escaping to the United States, he pursued various occupations before developing an interest in natural history. He worked as an assistant surgeon under Dr. William Hammond, collecting specimens for the United States National Museum. Xantus later held a consular position in Mexico before returning to Hungary. He served as the Director of the Zoological Garden of Budapest, curator of ethnography at the Hungarian National Museum, and conducted collecting expeditions in Asia.
