(One of the World's Greatest Natural Botanists) John Bartram was a highly respected American botanist and explorer located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as the "greatest natural botanist in the world" by Carl Linnaeus, Bartram exchanged plants and seeds with European scientists and established the first botanic garden in the United States in 1728. The garden, known as Bartram's Garden, operated until 1850 and is now a National Historic Landmark, continuing to flourish today.
