Apollonius of Perga, an ancient Greek geometer and astronomer, made significant contributions to mathematics, particularly in the field of conic sections. He built upon the work of Euclid and Archimedes by defining the terms ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola as they are known today. Apollonius is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of antiquity. In addition to geometry, he explored astronomy, proposing eccentric orbits to explain planetary motions. Despite much of his work being lost, his influence on mathematics and science endures.
