She served as the director of the National Heart Institute in Delhi and was the founder president of the All India Heart Foundation. Padmavati was the first woman cardiologist in India and established the country's first cardiac clinic and cardiac catheter lab. She received prestigious awards for her work, including the Padma Vibhushan in 1992. Her institute collaborated with the World Health Organization to train students in preventive cardiology.
