(15th Surgeon General of the United States (1993 -1994)) Minnie Joycelyn Elders is an American pediatrician and public health administrator who served as Surgeon General of the United States from 1993 to 1994. She was the second woman, second person of color, and first African American to hold this position. Elders gained attention for her bold stance on contentious issues like drug legalization, masturbation, and contraception distribution in schools. Despite resigning in the midst of controversy, she remains active in the field as a professor emerita of pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
