Johnny Hodges, an American alto saxophonist, was recognized for his solo performances with Duke Ellington's big band. He played lead alto and was featured on soprano saxophone. Beginning his career in Boston, he later performed in New York with different artists. Hodges joined Ellington's band in 1928, becoming a significant member. He led his own band briefly before reuniting with Ellington, helping the orchestra achieve success at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival.
