(composer, saxophonist, jazz musician) Wayne Shorter was an influential American jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He gained mainstream recognition in 1959 with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and later became the primary composer for the group. Shorter then joined Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet in 1964 before co-founding Weather Report in 1970. His compositions have become jazz standards, earning him critical acclaim and 12 Grammy Awards. Shorter was known for his mastery of the soprano saxophone, establishing himself as a top small-group composer and improviser. In 2017, he was honored with the Polar Music Prize.
