John Philip Sousa was an American composer and conductor who was renowned for his unmatched mastery in military march compositions. With his intimate knowledge of the United States Marine Band, he was responsible for elevating its excellence to a level hitherto not achieved by any of his predecessors and setting the standard that has been the benchmark for the ‘Marine Band’ Directors since. With his immense creative ability, Sousa, nicknamed ‘American March King’, singlehandedly made the marching band an American institution that even today continues to fill American hearts with patriotism and national pride. The turn of the 20th century that saw him at his most prolific best yielded musical compositions that stirred the hearts of not only Americans but also millions of music lovers all over the world. Some of his most well-known marches include the ‘National March of the United State of America’, ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ and ‘Semper Fidelis’, the Official March of the United States Marine Corps. A truly versatile musician, in addition to marches, Sousa wrote over 200 songs for the 15 operettas he composed as well as music in many other forms like suites, fantasies, humoresques, dances, and descriptive pieces and vocal works. He received hundreds of honors in his lifetime and posthumously.
