She has won six Olympic gold medals, four of which were earned at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Van Dyken set world records in swimming during her career and conquered severe asthma to establish herself as a leading figure in the sport. Unfortunately, in 2014, she sustained a spinal cord injury in an ATV accident that resulted in paralysis from the waist down.
