Charb, a French satirical caricaturist and journalist, gained recognition for his contributions to numerous newspapers and magazines. He began his association with Charlie Hebdo in 1992 and was appointed as the publication's director in 2009. Charb encountered serious threats from extremist groups over the publication of cartoons depicting Muhammad, which resulted in him requiring police protection following a firebomb attack in 2011. Sadly, he was tragically killed during the Charlie Hebdo shooting in 2015, alongside a police officer assigned to guard him.
