António de Oliveira Salazar was the prime minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968. He also held the ministries of defense (April 13, 1961–December 4, 1962) and finance (April 28, 1928–August 28, 1940). Salazar is remembered for his reformative financial policies and for establishing the 'Estado Novo.' His political thoughts had heavy tones of conservatism, authoritarianism, nationalism, and Catholicism. His governing style has been regarded differently by various critics. Some consider Salazar a savior of interwar Portugal, while others consider him a fascist dictator. He was a staunch opponent of ‘Nazism’ and abolished the discrimination of Jews. After his death, the 'Estado Novo' could only survive for 4 more years. Thus, the government collapsed soon after.
