(Politician) Gennady Yanayev was a prominent Soviet politician who held key positions within the leadership of the Soviet Union. He initially gained recognition as Chairman of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions and later secured a seat in the Politburo as Secretary of the Central Committee. In 1990, with the support of Mikhail Gorbachev, Yanayev assumed the role of Vice President of the Soviet Union. However, his involvement in the failed coup attempt led by the Gang of Eight to overthrow Gorbachev in 1991 resulted in his arrest. Yanayev was later pardoned in 1994.
