Alec Douglas-Home

Description: (Former PM of UK)

Alec Douglas-Home, Baron Home of the Hirsel, was a British ‘Conservative’ politician and a former prime minister of the United Kingdom (October 1963 to October 1964). During his tenure of public service, Home became known for his command over dealing with foreign matters. Interestingly, Home initially had no interest in venturing into politics. He was a talented cricketer and served in the ‘Territorial Army,’ too. He entered the parliament during the administration of Neville Chamberlain and earned enough experience to help him make decisions later in his career. He regained his seat in 1950, after a loss in the 1945 general election. Home succeeded his father as the 14th Earl of Home and subsequently earned senior positions in the ‘Conservative’ government. His controversial appointment as the prime minister in 1963 was followed by heavy opposition and criticism. It also marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the election process for the post. Even though Home's premiership tenure was short, he justified the appointment to his best. He, however, accepted his incapability as a leader. Home resigned in 1965 and served at the ‘Foreign and Commonwealth Office’ (1970–1974). Home died in 1995.
