Hu Yaobang was an influential Chinese politician and a member of the ‘Chinese Communist Party’ (CCP). At the tender age of 12, he began supporting communist leader Mao Zedong. He participated in various rebellions against the ‘Nationalist’ forces until his party’s victory in 1949 and the formation of the People’s Republic of China. During their expedition against the ‘Nationalist’ army in Sichuan, he was led by Deng Xiaoping, his friend and political mentor. After Yaobang rose to the position of secretary general and later the chairman of the party, he introduced a lot of economic and political reforms. He had a leaning toward the liberal ideology. He supported freedom of speech and freedom of the press. He worked his best to curb corruption and nepotism and improve transparency. However, his reformative ideas were not appreciated by the senior members of the party, and he paid the price for it. His death was the immediate cause of the ‘Tiananmen Square’ protests.
