Description:
(Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (1954-63))
Kumaraswami Kamaraj was a prominent Indian politician, activist, and statesman who played a significant role in both pre- and post-Independence politics. Born into a modest middle-class family, Kamaraj’s involvement in politics began at an early age. His growing interest in the country’s political system culminated in him becoming a full-time worker for the Indian National Congress during India’s struggle for independence. Kamaraj’s humble beginnings did not deter him, as he persistently worked to contribute to the Congress’s efforts to overthrow British rule. Starting as a campaigner, he rose to become a legislator in the Madras Presidency. The pinnacle of his career came when he was appointed the Chief Minister of Madras (now Tamil Nadu). Under his administration, the state witnessed significant progress and prosperity. The literacy rate, which was just 7%, rose to an impressive 37% due to the establishment of thousands of new schools and educational reforms. Kamaraj’s efforts in irrigation and industrial development also made Madras a leader in industrialization. Even after his tenure as Chief Minister, Kamaraj continued to serve the nation as the President of the Indian National Congress, playing a vital role in shaping national politics during the 1960s. For his immense contributions to the nation, Kamaraj was posthumously honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.
