Morarji Desai’s contributions to the freedom struggle and later as a politician are unparalleled. Starting as a civil service employee under the British regime, he took an active role in the freedom movement. After independence, he held various offices under different administrations, ultimately becoming the Prime Minister of India. His political career consistently advanced, driven by his deeply embedded values of hard work, perseverance, and truthfulness, which remained with him in all the roles he undertook. Desai’s unwavering sincerity toward working for the welfare of the people earned him widespread respect among his countrymen. While he made significant contributions in various portfolios, his tenure as Prime Minister is especially notable. Desai remains the only Indian to date to have been conferred Pakistan’s highest civilian award, the Nishan-e-Pakistan, in recognition of his efforts to promote peace between the two rival nations.
