Rayner Goddard, Baron Goddard, was the Lord Chief Justice of England from 1946 to 1958. Despite being appointed by a Labour government, he was known for his strict sentencing and conservative views. Goddard was the first Lord Chief Justice to hold a law degree. He earned nicknames such as 'The Tiger' and 'Justice-in-a-jiffy' due to his reputation for no-nonsense justice. Winston Churchill famously referred to him as 'Lord God-damn'. Goddard is remembered as one of the last hanging judges.
