(Lawyer) Preetinder Singh Bharara is an Indian-born American lawyer and former federal prosecutor. He served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. Before that, he worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and chief counsel to Senator Chuck Schumer. Bharara became known for his prosecution of the Italian mafia, leading counter-terrorism investigations against Al-Qaeda, and targeting Wall Street executives for insider trading. With a technocratic approach, he successfully convicted politicians of corruption, utilized wiretapping and asset seizure to close cases, and dealt with international controversies during his time in office.
