Roger I of Sicily was a Norman nobleman who served as the first Grand Count of Sicily from 1071 to 1101. He led military campaigns against the Emirate of Sicily and was granted control of part of Sicily by his brother, the Duke of Apulia, in 1071. By 1090, he had successfully conquered the entire island, including Malta in 1091. The territory he established was later united with the Duchy of Apulia in 1127, forming the Kingdom of Sicily in 1130. His descendants continued to rule over the kingdom until 1194.
