Description:
(Former Empress Consort of Russia)
Maria Feodorovna was the wife of Alexander III, Emperor of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland. Through this marriage, she was Empress of Russia from 1881 to 1894. Before getting married, she was Princess Dagmar of Denmark. Her parents were Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Kassel. She was extremely beautiful as a young woman and also blessed with great intelligence. She was one of Europe's most coveted princesses and received numerous marriage proposals. Alexander II of Russia asked for her hand in marriage for his heir apparent, Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich. Her parents agreed, and the couple got engaged in a lavish ceremony. Sadly, Nicholas passed away in 1865, and Maria’s marriage was arranged with his brother, Alexander. The couple got married in 1866. The following decades marked a tumultuous period in Russian history. Her husband, Emperor Alexander died in 1894, and her eldest son, Nicholas, took over as the last Russian monarch, Emperor Nicholas II. She acted as his son’s political advisor. In 1917, following the revolution, the monarchy was overthrown in Russia and the Dowager Empress Maria was forced to flee the country. After witnessing numerous tragedies in her personal life, she died in Denmark in 1928.
