He co-founded the Lounge Lizards jazz ensemble, appeared in various films, composed music for numerous projects, and produced and starred in the Fishing with John television series. Lurie garnered a Grammy Award nomination for his work on the Get Shorty soundtrack and received critical acclaim for his album The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits. Despite health challenges, he has shifted his focus to painting, with his artwork showcased worldwide, and is the creator of the series Painting with John. In 2021, he published a memoir titled The History of Bones.
