Jade Goody was an English reality television personality who became popular after her stint on TV show ‘Big Brother’. She also gained fame for her ignorance of general knowledge, with British tabloids vilifying and mocking her. Later, she made headlines again for her role in ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, and for the racial abuse that she and other housemates levelled on fellow contestant Shilpa Shetty. Receiving major criticism from national as well as international audiences, Jade Goody initially protested her innocence, but later on she acknowledged that people’s sentiments were indeed hurt by her comments. She later apologised to Shilpa Shetty, even agreeing to participate in the Indian version of ‘Big Brother’, named ‘Bigg Boss’ alongside her. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with cancer just two days after she entered the ‘Big Boss’ and as a result, she quit the show. She passed away barely seven months later, in 2009. Her battle with the disease is documented in detail; it helped raise a lot of awareness about cervical cancer, and greatly increased the number of women wanting to get screened themselves.
