Cont Mdladla Mhlanga, a renowned Zimbabwean playwright, actor, and theatre director, founded and led the Amakhosi Theatre Productions company in 1982. He fearlessly criticized the government of Robert Mugabe throughout his career, often leading to his arrest for publicly expressing dissenting views. Mhlanga's work and activism were recognized when he was honored as one of the winners of the inaugural Freedom to Create Prize in 2008, alongside other artists who used their platforms to address societal issues through their art.
