Matthew VanDyke is an American documentary filmmaker, revolutionary, and former journalist who became known for his involvement in the Libyan Civil War. He gained recognition for his role as a foreign fighter and as a prisoner of war during the conflict. VanDyke traveled extensively in North Africa and the Middle East between 2007 and 2011, which ultimately led to his decision to join the Libyan Civil War as a rebel fighter. He has also supported Arab Spring revolutions and worked as a filmmaker in the Syrian Civil War, participating in armed combat.
