William Strickland was a notable architect and civil engineer recognized for his involvement in the Greek Revival movement in the United States. He trained under Benjamin Latrobe and served as a mentor to Thomas Ustick Walter. Strickland made significant contributions to the advancement of early American railroads, including authoring a noteworthy book on railroad construction. Additionally, he was the designer of the first ocean breakwater in the Western Hemisphere. His professional achievements led to his election as a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1820.
