Donald Wills Douglas Sr. was an American aircraft industrialist and engineer who founded the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1921. He designed the Douglas Cloudster, which was the first airplane capable of carrying a payload greater than its own weight. His company became a prominent player in the commercial aircraft industry, producing successful models such as the DC-3 airliner and C-47 military transport. Despite its early success, Douglas Aircraft Company began to lag behind in the jet age and was eventually overtaken by Boeing. Donald Wills Douglas Sr. retired in 1957 after a prosperous career in aviation.
