He commanded two Space Shuttle missions, such as STS-2 in 1981, and was involved in the Shuttle program's Approach and Landing Tests. Engle also flew the North American X-15, completing three flights above 50 miles and earning astronaut wings. He was selected for NASA's 5th Astronaut Group, participated in the Apollo program, and served as a backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 14.
