Gelett Burgess was a multi-talented American artist, art critic, poet, author, and humorist who had a significant impact on the literary renaissance of the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1890s. He was well-known for his involvement with The Lark magazine and The Crowd literary group, and gained fame for his nonsensical poetry, particularly "The Purple Cow." Burgess introduced French modern art to the United States, worked as an illustrator, wrote the popular Goops books, and is credited with coining the term "blurb."
