Louis Buchalter who went by the name of Lepke was an American mobster who was the only one of the ganglords to be given a death penalty. He was born in New York in a Jewish American family. At school, he was known to be a good student and his siblings went on to become well-respected professionals. Buchalter though got into a life of crime after his father died and his mother moved away leaving him with his sister. He found an ally in Jacob Shapiro and together they robbed pushcarts and committed burglary. He was a well-established criminal by his early twenties and had also served prison sentences. Buchalter’s rise as a mobster started when he started extorting money from the garment industry businesses. He went on to control the entire garment and also bakery delivery industries in New York becoming one of the wealthiest mobster in the country. Buchalter also ran a contract killing business, carrying out murders for crime bosses. He was implicated in many crimes but either bribed the officials or was let go because of a lack of evidence. In the end, he got tricked into surrendering when he was led to believe that he would be given a mild sentence. Once he turned himself in, he was found guilty in a number of crimes including narcotics smuggling and murder. After multiple trials, he was sentenced to death and executed using an electric chair.
