Anne Bonny was an Irish-American female pirate active in the early part of the eighteenth century in the Caribbean Sea. She, along with her fellow crew member, Mary Read, were known as the only two female pirates in the Western world. She attracted attention of the authorities, authors, press and the society of her time by her daring and unconventional lifestyle. In her short but prolific career in piracy, she carved a name for herself as one of the most notorious pirates of her time. Though she never commanded a ship of her own, the fact that she was a female pirate at a time when Western society frowned upon women stepping out of the social roles assigned to them, gained her a lot of notoriety and a lasting legacy.
