Robert Orville Anderson was an influential American businessman, art collector, and philanthropist who founded the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). He led ARCO to become the sixth-largest oil company in the United States. Anderson was also renowned for his support of cultural institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Harper's Magazine. Upon retiring in 1986, he had accumulated substantial wealth and held extensive land holdings in Texas and New Mexico, making him the largest individual landowner in the country.
