Gengoroh Tagame is a prominent Japanese manga artist who has made significant contributions to the gay manga genre. He began his career in the 1980s, initially contributing to Japanese gay men's magazines. Tagame gained widespread recognition with his manga series The Toyed Man and went on to co-found the magazine G-men, eventually transitioning to full-time work as a gay manga artist. He is known for his explicit portrayals of sadomasochism and hypermasculinity, while also receiving praise for non-pornographic manga that explores LGBT themes. Tagame has also made a mark as an art historian through his anthology series Gay Erotic Art in Japan.
