Chokuan Soga was a distinguished Japanese painter renowned for his bird-and-flower artworks, particularly excelling in the portrayal of landfowl, like roosters, with a striking mix of careful brushwork and rich tones. He was recognized for his swift artistic style, aligning with the prevalent trend of ink wash painting during his era. Soga's expertise extended to depictions of falconry, and he received commissions from notable samurai for painting tethered hawk images on folding screens. While his life remains largely unrecorded, his artistic legacy endured through his son, Nichokuan, who carried on the Soga school with a focus on rendering impressive hawk illustrations.
